Check how cancellation finders will use your personal data

The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) does not run any cancellation apps or services.

That means that you need to give your personal data to someone else to use a cancellation finder. But do you know who they are?

What the website or app must tell you

The law says that businesses who process your personal data must tell you certain information. This is usually in a privacy notice. They have to tell you:

  • who they are and their contact details
  • what personal data they’re processing
  • why they’re collecting your personal data
  • the lawful basis for processing your personal data
  • what they’ll do with your personal data
  • how long they’ll store your personal data
  • where your personal data might go
  • your rights over your personal data
  • about your right to complain to the Information Commissioner and give you their contact details

What you should do

If you’re thinking of using a cancellation app or service, make sure that:

  • you read their privacy policy
  • it covers all the points mentioned above

If you think something is wrong

Do you really want to give your driving licence number to someone if you do not know who they are, how long they’re going to keep it, and you do not know how they’re going to use it?

Never use a service if you do not agree with how they will use your data.
Complain if a service does not have a full privacy notice.

Complain if the privacy notice is incomplete, or you think someone has misused your data

Complain to the company running the service if you think:

  • the privacy notice is incomplete or missing
  • the company has misused your data

Complain to the Information Commissioner’s Office if you’re not happy with their response.
